Trends in the Development of Standard British American English under Globalisation
Abstract
The paper studies the mechanisms and processes which arise during language contacts between Standard British American English (SBAE) and various autochthonous languages of the world under globalization. The author focuses on the diffusion of SBAE as a process influenced by sociocultural and economic forces determining unity and variation in language. The aim of the paper is to reveal the trends in the development of SBAE which acts as a means of international communication under the current conditions. Diverse multilingual communities use SBAE to attain their socioeconomic objectives. In this respect, the global language situation was divided into several levels of interaction, depending on the possibility of language communities to use in their socioeconomic activities one or another language. This allowed the author to define the mechanisms and conditions of SBAE diffusion and to conceptualize the whole diversity of its varieties within a field model that made possible to forecast the consequences of its future development.
