Participation in extracurricular activities and youth development: Associations between type of activity and personal/interpersonal skills growth
Abstract
The study analyses self-reported developmental experiences of adolescents participating in various types of extracurricular activities. A representative sample of adolescents from several regions of Russian Federation (Saint-Petersburg and Leningrad region, Tomsk and Tomsk region, Pskov) consisted of 3367 9-grade students. We used YES instrument developed by D. M. Hansen & R.W. Larson (2005) for adolescents to report their skills and competencies. The questionnaire has been administered to students participating in various types of extracurricular activities; data was analyzed with multiple regression method. The findings indicate that certain types of extracurricular activities are related to development of particular personal and interpersonal skills. Specifically, individual sports and martial arts were linked to the development of time management and goal setting; performance arts and sports were related to the development of team work skills and growing social capital; all types of extracurricular activities were related to identity formation. Each type of activity is characterized by its own profile of skill growth and personal development.
