Abstract
The paper is devoted to the analysis of the character of a pilot in works of A. de Saint-Exupery in the context of mythopoetics and the archetype of a cultural hero. The theme of an aviation and character of a pilot are the main elements of Saint-Exupery`s poetics. Being a professional pilot he described true events and created the heroic and mainly mythologized character of a pilot. There are some functions of a cultural hero such as fighting powers of nature or mythical beasts, making new ways, forming human society in his works. There are also motives of an initiation, a magic transition to other world, death and rebirth. The archetypes of night, desert, sky/earth opposition are connected with the character of a pilot.
