The myth about Theban commander was interpreted by many authors throughout the development of foreign literature (Plautus, Molière, Dryden, Kleist, Giraudoux, Kaiser, Hacks). At different times the plot attracted attention of the authors not only by the dynamic intrigue and the comic situation with doppelgangers, but also by the possibility of statement of general philosophical and existential issues. In the twentieth century that was marked by intense technical development and powerful social and political cataclysms, the new generation of writers refers to the centuries-old plot. Comparative analysis of dramas of J. Giraudoux and P. Hacks allows revealing resemblances and differences in reception of mythological material, determined by the time of creation as well as by singularity of ideology and aesthetic principals of the authors.
